I haven’t worn deodorant in 3 days. And I don’t smell as bad as I thought I would. No I didn’t forget to put on deodorant I purposefully skipped applying the brand that I had been using until I could find something that wouldn’t slowly poison my body. I’m sure you’ve heard about how antiperspirants have been linked to breast cancer, right?! I just read about it 3 days ago and it was eye-opening.
Why You Need to Stop Using Antiperspirants
In a nutshell, the active ingredients in antiperspirants are “aluminum components that form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface1.” Sweat is one of our body’s way of eliminating toxins and just because the toxins are prevented from exiting through our underarms doesn’t mean they disappear. In theory, the toxins then travel to the nearest tissue, breast cells, which can lead to breast cancer. In women and men. Scary! And I had been using my antiperspirant for well over a decade.
What Deodorant Can I Use That’s Safe?
There are many alternatives to aluminum based antiperspirants, some available in stores and other DIY homemade versions. I opted for the store-brought route because I don’t have the time right now to mix up my own although I would love to in the future. The key is to make sure your deodorant / antiperspirant does not contain aluminum components (Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium, Aluminum Chloride, Tricholorohydrex Glycine, Aluminum Hydroxybromid) or parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparabe).
If you can’t stop using your deodorant that contains the aforementioned ingredients than at least take a shower at night and/or wash your underarms with soap and water before going to bed to allow your body a chance to eliminate toxins while you sleep.
I’m Using a Natural Antiperspirant
I’m going cold turkey. I stopped using my antiperspirant 3 days ago to allow my sweat ducts a chance to unclog. Today, I picked up the Crystal Body deodorant and I’m excited to give it a try! The Crystal Body Deodorant is made from simple mineral salts that form an invisible layer of natural deodorant protection on the skin2.
There are mixed reviews about the Crystal Body deodorant’s effectiveness at keeping you fresh and dry all day but most reviews were only over a few days. I firmly believe you have to allow your body time to heal and adjust, just like with oil cleansing. You have to allow your body time to heal. Click To Tweet
The Crystal body deodorant stick is suppose to last a least 1 year (amazing!). So my plan is to use it for the next few weeks and share my experience with you.
Have you tried using a natural deodorant or antiperspirant without aluminum? What brands would recommend?
